3 years in a row

For the Third year in a row....my kids are a 'wee bit' cranked up over Basketball....this is but one of the reasons!

In the vest knitting, we're heading up the front sides, that I'm knitting side by side. That way I can be certain they are the same length and the same 'gauge'. I finished the back up to the bottom of the armholes yesterday, and want to do all the armhole shaping at the same time. We'll see how it goes.

Don't you just wish...

Well, let me get to that question in just a moment. First, I had the best of intentions for joining in the Harlot's Sock Scavenger hunt yesterday. Knowing that I wasn't going to be online for much of yesterday, I stayed up well past midnight and took a picture of my long suffering/hibernating pair of Red Wing's Socks. I thought they might go well with the strawberries.

Seeing as how it was 1:43am PST, I didn't want to throw them on the computer at that point, so I just went to bed and figured I'd get up and take more pictures in the morning outside without having to use a flash. I wanted to make sure that the pictures weren't too blurry.

Out of 10 pictures, this is the only one that wasn't. Then it was off to drive the good old freeways of LA. (Remember the house on the freeway back in September?) Oh, ya, I thought I'd left in pleantyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy of time to upload this to the contest. [insert music here......] Famous last words. You know the saying. The best laid plans of mice and men...
The first clue I had that something wasn't going to go as planned, came when the helicopter announcer for the radio station was saying that 'We have something unusual going on the 105 freeway at this time. That's all we're going to say until we get more details.'

Great!

As the traffic began to thicken, the radio guy came back and said that there was some police activity on the freeway. They'd come across someone who'd been shot several times in the torso.
Great! Welcome to LA!

As I continued to drive along more and more police and CHP cars and motorcycles were passing us. What was the full story? Well, seems that some 'brilliant' driver began to try and run another car off the road. Who was in that car? Well, it was an off duty police officer!

Oh, the story 'gets better.'

According to the radio, the police officer was able to pull over the car to the side of the road. The 'brilliant' driver then came out and went after the police office with a knife, trying to stab him. So the officer used his government issued gun and shot him several times. The 'brilliant' driver was then taken to the hospital and according to the traffic updates was awake and alert during the transport.

Now, by the time I reached the section of freeway affected, the 105 East was shut down completely. They had an ongoing police investigation continuing. That makes sense, right? However, I was on the 105 WEST. Where we were now slowed down to about 5mph. Why? Because apparently everyone on my side of the freeway had to look! Hey drivers! There are two cement dividers and a train track separating both the East bound and the West bound directions of the freeway. The only thing you could see if you tried...was the tops of at least 20 police cars and lots of officers standing around on the freeway. The guy wasn't even still there! The radio said he'd already been at the hospital long before we made it to that point.

Granted, we did pass by a motorcycle in the car pool lane that was laying on it's side and an empty police car parked behind it so one one would run over it on the West bound portion of the freeway. But, there wasn't a single person or emergency vehicle near by! Just left there, clogging the traffic. But that was long before I came up to this:

Yep, that would be six (not one, not two, not three, four or five but six!) helicopters 'hanging' in the air. My guess they wanted to film nothing happening at the time, just cars slowing down to view officers standing around talking to each other as the cars backed up so people could NOT get to their destinations on time. If this had been during the pursuit I could understand. But this must have been a good 20-30 minutes AFTER the guy was taken away! Welcome to LA and her freeways.

I hate driving in LA some days. It's enough to drive you (OK, me) batty.

Now, let me tell you that a can of diet coke, a box of whoppers and some strawberries can keep a girl well taken care of while she's driving in stupid traffic through LA. Unless....

She should have used the rest room BEFORE she left the house in the morning?

So here's my question....Somedays don't you wish that stupid people had stayed home in the morning and just slept it off?

*sigh* just think how my driving would be oh so boring if they had...

The rest of the day...I worked on my Dad's vest. I didn't have to be 'nuts' wondering if a helicopter was going to slam into another one (or five) and drop on me by then.

Oh, and I never did get the pictures posted to the contest. Loving the distractions here.

It's still March..but...

For as long as I've been in Southern California, I still can't get used to strawberries in March. It's a JUNE thing...right? Oh well, we're going to have strawberry shortcakes later today! No matter WHAT the calendar says. (sorry Mom and Dad, I know it's only 40* there today...We'll have some in your honor!)

And the vest, is flying along so long as I quit watching March Madness basketball games and pay attention to which way the cables are supposed to go and which row I'm on..the knit across, or the K1, P1 row....oy! I am loving the way this Paton's Classic Wool is popping out the cables here! Hope this does the trick to keep Dad warm!

Off to meet with the strawberry huller ... I'll be thinking of you all still covered in snow. You can pay me back in June, right about the time they plow under the rest of our strawberries. I'll be very envious at that point. Trust me. It's true.

[Late Update!]

OK, so we made a swap idea for tonight...after looking at the size of some of these strawberries, we opted out of the shortcake just for tonight and while the daughter went to pick up some In and Out for dinner, I melted some chocolate and dipped those puppies! Yummy! The left overs are on plastic spoons waiting for some hot chocolate. YUMM-O! Some days, a girl just had to sit on the sofa and veg with her Mom. And a smart Mom knows when to bring out the chocolate!

It's been a very busy week!

OK, so I haven't posted much. Well, I've been rather busy.
Saturday
Last Saturday we had a very longgggggggggggggggg day! We started out before the crack of dawn. OK, it was closer to 7:30 am heading up to the Southern California Flower Mart. I tell you-it makes you want to NEVER step foot into a flower shop again! 25 roses for $15!

Then over to the Bridal store, OK it was 3 of them before lunch..but I can't show you those! (the dresses I mean...)

Before heading over to play with the flowers. By the time I got home again, it was well after midnight! But it was a lot of fun. A real Girls Day!

Sunday

Sunday was Easter, and I knit up a couple of fast knits to take along with us for dinner...

Monday

On Monday we FINALLY celebrated the daughter's birthday...better than last year when we didn't get our schedules matched up until September, and I finished felting all those oven mitts and trivets. Love that "Felted Knits" book! Yep, she's a real pink and purple kinda girl!

Tuesday

By Tuesday, my foot looked like this. See the bump above my ankle? Between the walking, the standing, and the fact that I tripped 3 times within a couple of hours, I was in trouble. Same place that I broke it nearly 5 years ago.

What's a girl to do when sitting all week with her foot up? She knits, of course!

Finished a couple of Grandma's Favorites and some more Tribbles-check out how the yarns striped themselves!
Wednesday

Finished the Baby Jiffy Knit sweater with the Simply Soft Lemonade yarn my Mom untangled for me while I was back in Michigan. (size (US)7 (4.5mm) addi lace turbos, in case you're wondering.

Thursday

FINALLY finished The "H" store Rib Knit Scarf I'd started well over a year ago. 2 skeins of two colors of Plymouth Encore worsted, double stranded on (US) 11 (8.0mm) needles. 4 Rows of each color, running the 'unused' color up the side. The pattern is over there<---. Friday

Friday found me back once again on my Dad's vest. (It's about time huh?) Dad has been moved to the Special Care section of the West Campus. Mom isn't happy with how little he's eating, but all tubes have pretty much been removed and he's up and walking as part of his physical therapy daily. Little by little, he's showing improvement.

Later on Friday night, daughter mentioned that she was going to a Bridal Shower for a friend of hers. So, between what I already had on hand, and the yarn in the 'stash' I started knitting up a few more.

Saturday

With a mixing bowl set and a couple of spatulas from the Food Network's line at Kohl's, we wrapped up a bit of knitting for the kitchen! Now, I ask you, for a Bride from UCLA during March Madness...doesn't that Tribble look like it could double as a basketball if I had just added a couple of brown 'seams'? In case you're interested: Green: Christmas Lace Dishcloth, Multi UCLA colors: Grandma's Favorites, Orange: Puffy Basketweave Dishcloth and Tribble, Blue and White Multi: Grandma's Favorite and Tribble, Navy: KBB Dishcloth and KBB Kitchen Hanging Hand Towel, While and light blue; Bridal Shower Lace.
